Everything is an adventure here in Korea.  We went to pick up my ring on Monday.  When the jeweler pulled it out, it was missing the big diamond.  He told us he was taking us to the factory where they would put the diamond in.  We left the store, out the back door into an alley, turned onto a road, then down another alley, then another, and finally up some very steep stairs.  Now, had we been anywhere other than Korea, I would have been totally freaked out thinking we were about to be taken into a dark alley where someone could rob us worse.  I mean we had a ton of won (cash) on us as Koreans don't like to deal in plastic.  To be fully honest I was a little freaked out and was thankful Hubby went with me to pick the ring up. Once we reached to top of the stairs this is what we saw....

All these guys work very hard to make the rings we wear today.  Each one has a different job, one sets the small diamonds, one sizes the ring, another polishes the rings and so on.  The next picture is of the man that actually made my ring, although each of these guys worked on it. In the picture below he is putting the diamond in my ring.

And, here is the finished product!!!

The ring is GORGEOUS! I just returned from NYC, where I had a similar adventure (blog posting to come this weekend, probably). The 47th street diamond district is JUST like that. I had my engagement ring diamond re-set (it's a long story) and you can "follow your diamond", if you want to, and stay with it as they take it across the street, down the alley, up some back stairs, through a hallway, etc., so that's it's not ever out of your sight as they're working on it. Some unscrupulous jewelers have done things like switch the diamond (for a lesser or quality or even a fake one) while the customer's not looking, but I trust my guy and have been working with him for years. Anyway, it's the same environment and it really is a trip. I almost feel like I'm going back in time when I visit there. For anyone going to NYC right now - the jewelers are DESPERATE, with the economy where it is right now - there are some staggering deals to be had. Enjoy the ring Trish - it's LOVELY!

Proud Army wife and mother to 4 wonderful children.  I love to cook, travel, work out and scrapbook life’s adventures when I find the time.  We just got orders & are heading back to the states in March 2010.  I'm bummed that our time has been cut short, but proud of Hubby for the reason why.
