I ran out to snap this picture today because of the fog....for the past month the Yacht Club has been outlined in lights which I have thoroughly enjoyed! I was hoping to catch it in the fog with the lights on, but no such luck, However, I love this look. Notice how the sidewalk is littered with shells? You can thank the seagulls for that! They are some messy little creatures!
A little about Ida Lewis; what a woman! Born in Newport in 1842, she became the first woman to receive the Congressional Medal for saving lives!
During her 39 years on Lime Rock (which was later renamed the Ida Lewis Rock), she was credited for saving more than 18 lives. Her first rescue was in 1858 at the age of 17, and her last was at the age of 63 when she saved a close friend who was coming to see her. She became the highest paid lighthouse keeper of that time earning $750 a year! She was credited for saving more than 18 lives.
