When you go to the Noodle Lady's house for lunch it is like you are going to Grandma's house. Your sassy grandma's house. I mean look at her! How cute is this woman? Honestly I would have NEVER in 1 million years gone up that staircase because I would have never known this is a restaurant. The only 'sign' this is a restaurant is that little 'sign' above with Korean writing and a phone number. Who knew?! (Well I guess if I read Korea I might have been able to figure it out....) Kimchi pots full of kimchi goodness. Here is the menu. She has noodles. 2 different types of noodles and kimchi mandu. I'm not sure if kimchi mandu is on the menu or not but we had it and it ROCKED. Luckily we went with my beautiful friend that knows the Noodle Lady. I'm not sure if we got special treatment because of my friend, but I totally felt 'a home' while here. We ate in her living room. No really, we did. From what I understand the Noodle Lady has been cooking up noodles for years and years right here in this kitchen. I'm not really sure what this is, but I see it drying often. Some Americans might be put off because it is not a traditional restaurant. I feel sorry for those Americans as they are going to miss out on something special. She has fat noodles And thin noodles The thin noodles are my favorite. The noodles are called Kalguksu and they date back to the 12th century. They are a handmade wheat flour noodle that is cut by hand and served in a thick seafood broth. If you are lucky you might get a clam. Once you have Kalguksu you will never look at noodles the same again. The kimchi mandu. OMGoodness... I had NEVER before had kimchi mandu. It was THE BEST mandu I have ever eaten. We left full and happy. I think she was full and happy when we left too. To get there: From the Gas Station gate on post.... Cross over into Itaewon. Typically you would walk straight....this time turn right like you are walking back towards the Commissary gate... Turn LEFT at the 1st street - just past the dog groomer - the alley between urban works and Bull and Barrel restaurant is her alley. It is across from the entrance of the Underground market in Itaewon. It looks like this: Thanks to a friend that went out and took this picture!! Turn RIGHT. You will see the staircase pictured above. Go up the stairs.
The noodle is only open for lunch. Birthday Girls! Birthdays are always a good reason for a girl's night out! The eight of us headed out to Wang Thai in Itaewon last Saturday night for a little birthday celebratory birthday fun! This was the first time I had ever been to Wang Thai. The service was good and the company was great! We had our own private room and many people LOVE this restaurant. Me, not so much. This was my favorite part of my meal (other than the company of course!). Singha baby. Singha. I ordered the spicy beef salad (one of my favorite Thai dishes) and even though it looks good it was lacking one major component - SPICE. I also tried several other dishes there....all very bland for Thai food. My recomendation is if you are looking for authentic Thai food, to skip Wang Thai and head on over to My Thai. After dinner (I think I was the only one that didn't like Wang Thai) we headed over to the Bulldog...a bar in Itaewon that played 70's, 80's & 90's music! How fun is that?!?! The music is fun, the drinks are BAD!!! Stick to beer if you go to the Bulldog! After the Bulldog we lost a few of our party goers. The remaining four of us headed over to International Alley and found ourselves in the New Gekos Supper Club. This is my kind of place. (Yes, I admit it, I am a food and drink snob.) This iPad was our menu. How FREAKING COOL is that?!?! And check out how pretty our drinks are! AND they tasted BETTER than they look! NO JOKE! I love this place! As if the amazing drinks weren't enough, our waiter heard me say I was hungry so he brought this AMAZING salad to me - ON THE HOUSE!! Oh, oh - and check out that water bottle...yes, that is how they serve water here - 'no extra chargie'. Happiness is finding a new group of friends each time you move. :)
Holy Goodness. I can't believe it took us so long to get to the Flying Pan Blue. Then we received the bill and I totally remembered why it was a once in a while treat! Everyone is talking about 'The Pizza Peel'. I can't tell you how many times I have been ask "have you tried Pizza Peel?" So the other night when we were walking down Itaewon Street on our way to Antonios we stumbled upon The Pizza Peel and we decided to ditch the Antonios plan and head into The Pizza Peel for a couple of reason, #1, We were STARVING #2 The Pizza Peel is SUPER CLOSE to the Itaewon gate #3 To be able to answer the question with a 'yes' and #4 It was REDICIOUSLY HOT outside. I almost feel like I am back in Texas! The Pizza Peel just a little hole in the wall off the little alley right before you get to Starbucks - on the right side of the street - see the mannequins? One is in a blue shirt one is in a plaid shirt? The Pizza Peel sign is right above their necks (they have no heads), just tuck right into that little Alley and The Pizza Peel is on your right. The owner is Canadian and cooks all his pizzas in this brick oven. And let me tell you, they are YUMMY!! This is the margarita pizza, we ordered this one for Hubby and I... However the boys LOVED it and ate half of it! We also ordered a Hawaiian Pizza, another family favorite. We really enjoyed the pizza at The Pizza Peel. The ingredients were fresh and generous. However the pizzas were pretty small and a bit pricy for this family of 6. There were only 4 of us at dinner, Hubby, myself and the little boys and we devoured 2 pizzas (we thought we would have left overs to take back) and the total cost for 2 beers and 2 pizzas was right at 40,000 won. We will go back, but this will not be a weekly eating spot... I can't wait to try their calzones....
On our last Saturday night here back in April of 2010 we went out with our friends Randy, Tammy, Brent and Beth. We had a FABULOUS night that started out with an awesome dinner at an all you can eat Korean Buffet. When Hubby and I found out we were moving back to Seoul we knew we wanted to find the "all you can eat Korean buffet" and since Beth and Brent still live here we were certain they would know where it is. Well, that last night out we took a cab and we went through alleys, up and down hills and we got lost - Beth & Brent had no idea where this place was and they were hoping we knew. A call to Randy and Tammy was in order and we all crossed our fingers in hopes that they would be able to give us directions and guess what - THEY REMEMBERED!! So last weekend Hubby and I headed out in search of the "all you can eat Korean Buffet". AND WE FOUND IT!! OH YEAH BABY! As with many things this buffet wasn't as good as we remembered it but that is NOT to say it was not good and that we won't go back because we will. I'm just saying that our last Saturday night is Seoul was so fabulous that we were expecting more. (It could have had something to do with the cocktails we had before, during and after....) Anyway, we WILL go back and we will most definitely take the kids back. This is a great place for those of you that just like the meat and rice (like our kids) as it is 'all you can eat'... Some of the sides: The 'leaf' part to beef and leaf. Since it is an all you can eat buffet Hubby and I tried pretty much everything. Here is a sampling of our seafood: (Please notice the beer in back...that was not intentional, although it did make me laugh.) ((Can you believe I am in my 40's?)) You may find this surprising especially if you have been following me for a while, (and after my trip to Japan back in'09) but see that little squid? DELICIOUS. Really. I loved eating him. Like the two pictures? The one on the left is pre-cooking, the one on the right - they are done. They totally swell up. Crazy watching them cook. This little guy was pretty good too. As well as the eel in the back. However this....I have NO IDEA what this is. It was in a shell of sorts. When it cooked it started growing. It kind of reminded me of a penis. I could NOT eat this. Even looking at it now kind of freaks me out and makes me shiver. OK - How do you get to the all you can eat Korean buffet? It is kind of a long haul from post, but it is fun and it is an adventure. If you must, take a cab.
From Post - Go out the Itaewon gate. Stay on the right hand side. Walk all the way to the first big intersection. You know the one - the one with the light. The Hamilton Hotel is on the left and the only way you can turn is right. (If you turn left you will be in the Hamilton Hotel.) Cross the street and turn right. At this point you have about a mile to go. Walk, walk, walk....you will be going downhill. When you come to another big intersection and streets are going every which way continue as straight as possible, the street will kind of veer left and downhill - this is the straightest way possible....continue on. Still going downhill. It feels like forever. Just when you are about to give up you will see it on your left. The tables are lined and the picture of the restaurant is at the top of this page. Have fun and enjoy!! When THREE different (random) people tell me that there is a new 'Mexican' restaurant in town and that it is FABULOUS I tend to listen. However when they say they have AWESOME Pork Carnita Kimchi Fries my ears tend to perk up like a dog that just heard one of those loud whistles that only dogs hear and it hurts my ears... Excuse me, but did you say Pork Carnita Kimchi FRENCH FRIES? What part of that other than pork carnitas is Mexican? I ask a few more questions. After several conversations I decided to give this place a try, BUT I also decided to go in NOT thinking of this place as a 'Mexican Restaurant'. Good thing too. However what I have to say might SHOCK you. Are you ready? Pork Carnita Kimchi Fries are THE BOMB!!! Holy Hell. I'm not joking! And just to be clear, their chips (made on site), salsa (2 types) and guacamole where also pretty darn good too! To get there from Post:
Go out the Iteawon Gate. Stay on right hand side of the street. When you get to the alley where all the bags are, TURN RIGHT. Pass the beloved "Bag Man" (on left) Go to the next alley, and turn right. Vapos will be down maybe a block or two on your right, 2nd floor. (This is the same street that if you keep going you will end up on Hooker Hill.) It is VERY SMALL. (Not Hooker Hill, but Vapos.) |
